Craft Your Stash Literature Study

Each month I participate in a Craft Your Stash group at SplitCoast Stampers. The March challenge is to create a card based on a book or person in a book. I read a lot of books but couldn’t think of a person in a book to base my card on, so my husband suggested I read the book Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey. I took his challenge and read the book. Here is my card based on the book.

Rider’s of the Purple Sage

The book is set in Utah. The author does a great job of describing the landscape. My card is does not do the landscape justice, but it is what I could create. I saw a card by Tami White a Stampin’Up demonstrator and thought it was a good fit for what I wanted to create.

I used the March Paper Pumpkin kit, called Here’s to You in creating this card. It is their anniversary month, so it came with extra items in the kit including stencils and a sponge. I used the sponge as I created along with Tami. I prefer other sponges where my fingers stay clean, so next time I will use other kinds of blending tools in my stash. The bottom portion of the card front is cut from a piece in the kit. The top portion was sponged on Bristol paper using Calypso Coral, Cajun Craze, Blackberry Bliss, Pretty Peacock, and Seaside Spray. The stencils include mountains and clouds, so I sponged along with Tami creating the scene.

In the book, there are many riders on Arabian horses. I used a horse from Outwest2 illustrated by Theresa Momber, from Gina K Designs. I added the layers like Tami used and placed on a Crumb Cake cardstock.

This was an enjoyable challenge, especially reading a book that my husband suggested. This is not the kind of books I normally read, but it was good and held my interest. It gave us something to talk about. There is a another book that tells more of the story called The Rainbow Trail. I will probably read this sometime after I take a break and read other books.

I found the above photo by searching for Utah and Sage. It seems to be all about the book, movie, or another visual of the book.

Spring Bunny

I pulled out a very old Penny Black stamp and created a card.

https://www.retrorubberchallengeblog.com/my-blog/2021/03/challenge-154-anything-goes.html http://sweetstampinchallengeblog.blogspot.com/ https://modsquadchallenge.com/springtime-bunnies/

The main image is a woodblock stamp from Penny Black, Bees & Bunny, dated 2001. I colored it using alcohol markers like the sticker on the woodblock stamp. The greeting is illustrated by Claire Brennan, distributed by Gina K Designs, copyright 2017, Springtime Baskets. The patterned paper is Echo Park either a spring set or an Easter set; I have both and didn’t make a note telling me which set it came from.

I am entering this in the Retro Rubber Challenge of Anything Goes, Sweet Stampin’ Challenge Blog using a mood board, and Mod Squad Springtime Bunnies challenge.

Easter Tulips

I am making Easter cards and pulled out a favorite set called Easter Blessings, 2015, by Stampin’ Up, retired several years ago. The greeting is from Joy Clair, Easter Greetings, 2019, also retired.

I used the colors Gina K Designs Sweet Corn for SU So Saffron, and SU Mango Melody and Pear Pizzazz for the tulips and scalloped cardstock layer. I chose to watercolor these flowers.

Virtual Stamp Night Mini

Each quarter, Split Coast Stampers has a Virtual Stamp Night where challenges are posted every hour or two over a 2 day period. Prior to this is a Mini challenge, where 3 challenges are posted. The Spring theme is The Great Outdoors. Following are my cards for the mini challenges.

VSNMini1

This challenge needed music and a tree in a park like setting. I used Sittin Tree by Maymay Made It for my tree with the bird feeder. Shroeder plays his music under the tree. Notes from My Favorite Things are flying through the air while the paino is being played.

VSNMini2

This challenge needed butterflies. I found an idea on Pinterest with this SU Butterfly Basics set, so I went with it. I liked how this card turned out. All sets used are SU.

VSNMini3

The third card is to have a snowy mountain. I used two SU sets to complete this card. Once again, I went to Pinterest for an idea. I stamped in Bristol paper and watercolored.

The key to these challenges is that the card has to be completed in one hour, and preparatory work is not included in that hour. I find having cut card bases and possibly layers sitting around helps when trying to complete several card in a short time period.

MSC Spring has Sprung

This card is for the Mod Squad Challenge Beautiful Butterflies. I used the March Sheetload of Cards Sketch while creating this card.

https://modsquadchallenge.com/beautiful-butterflies/

The paper used is from Lawn Fawn. When I have placed an order with this company, they include patterned paper with the order. This was one sheet, front and back both used on this card. Another sheet was used for a layer behind the floral and for the scalloped circle. The butterfly and greeting are from the set Spring has Sprung illustrated by Rupa Shevde for Gina K Designs. It is long ago retired.

I like this sketch. I may make a few more with the spring, Easter idea.

Ewe are Awesome

Each month I participate in a theme card from the Crafter’s of Faith group on SplitcoastStampers. This month’s verse is from Psalm 95: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8:

Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our savior. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms. Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us. For he is the Lord our God; and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Challenge–Make a card with music and a heart somewhere on it. Bonus add a sheep/lamb-but that is not necessary.

It took the challenge literally, as I usually do. Following is my card:

This is also perfect for the Just Us Girls challenge. The heart paper is from The Stamps of Life. I used two green sheets for grass and blue for the sky. The sheep and greeting are from sheep2stamp and patterns4sheep, cut out with matching dies. One of the sheep is a mirror image, so I had to learn how to create this using palette4mirror. The music notes were already cut and in stash; they are from My Favorite Things.

I am pleased with this card. Usually I add the Bible verse to my faith cards, but this time, I with with a fun pun from the sheep set. I have no idea who I will mail this to, but I know I will find someone who really needs this card.

Birdhouse Fold-It Card

This card is using products from The Stamps of Life. I own a few fold-it cards where you use dies to create the card base and then decorate the front to your heart’s desire.

http://justusgirlschallenge.blogspot.com/2021/03/just-us-girls-574-word-week.html

The Just Us Girls challenge is to showcase animals. I love these birds and they work perfectly with this birdhouse. The birds are from the set called birds2stamp and I used matching dies to cut them out. The greeting hello is from Notebook Edge and Hello Dies set. The birdhouse itself is from the 5 x 7 Birdhouse Fold-it die set. The flowers are from hippo2stamp and solids4hippo sets along with matching dies.

This week, Stephanie Bernard, owner and creator of The Stamps of Life, stated in her Live broadcast on YouTube she would be part of a special with Home Shopping Network on Facebook. She was asking her customers who have her product that she would be showcasing to create samples for her to show. She is showcasing the birdhouse and several other items, but I only owned the birdhouse. I went to work creating a card. She said paper didn’t matter, just make it solid so it would show up in the bright lights and showcase any product from The Stamps of Life. So the birdhouse got birds for the front, embellishment with flowers and a simple greeting to complete the card. Then I added Nuvo drops to the flower center and Glossy Accents to the bird beaks and eyes. Since I went to the work creating it, I will plan to mail it on Monday. She may or may not show it in her broadcast and since I do not use FB, I will not see it. I like what I created and it works perfectly for this week Just us Girls challenge.

Bold Birthday

I created this card for someone turning 108 years young this month. She needs texture, large images, and loves flowers.

https://www.retrorubberchallengeblog.com/my-blog/2021/03/challenge-153-tic-tac-toe.html

This card fits the Retro Rubber Challenge with the Tic-Tac-Toe grid.

My card fits the bottom line. I used Stampin’Up sets Special Reason from 2017 and Perfectly Penned from 2011. There are dies that fit the images in Special Reason, so that takes care of the dies. The texture is created with the Swiss Dots Cuttlebug Folder as well as heat embossing the greeting. The color blue is Balmy Blue in the cardstock which is peeking through the die cut flower on the white layer. Other texture is the lace I used on the front.

This will also be added to Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Beautiful Blossom challenge.

Progressive Card Class 2 W-Fold card

I am sharing my W-Fold card following directions from the card class. I used scrapbook papers along with a sticker, so my layout is a bit different from the class example.

W-fold standing
W-fold Front

I used the Carta Bella Home Again scrapbook papers and stickers and Stampin Up Magnolia Blooms set, Island Indigo, and Blue Lagoon papers in completing this card. The W-fold is easier than I thought. Mine is thick since I layered the inside. I liked this fold and will make it again.
