Each month I participate in a Craft Your Stash group at SplitCoast Stampers. The March challenge is to create a card based on a book or person in a book. I read a lot of books but couldn’t think of a person in a book to base my card on, so my husband suggested I read the book Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey. I took his challenge and read the book. Here is my card based on the book.

The book is set in Utah. The author does a great job of describing the landscape. My card is does not do the landscape justice, but it is what I could create. I saw a card by Tami White a Stampin’Up demonstrator and thought it was a good fit for what I wanted to create.
I used the March Paper Pumpkin kit, called Here’s to You in creating this card. It is their anniversary month, so it came with extra items in the kit including stencils and a sponge. I used the sponge as I created along with Tami. I prefer other sponges where my fingers stay clean, so next time I will use other kinds of blending tools in my stash. The bottom portion of the card front is cut from a piece in the kit. The top portion was sponged on Bristol paper using Calypso Coral, Cajun Craze, Blackberry Bliss, Pretty Peacock, and Seaside Spray. The stencils include mountains and clouds, so I sponged along with Tami creating the scene.
In the book, there are many riders on Arabian horses. I used a horse from Outwest2 illustrated by Theresa Momber, from Gina K Designs. I added the layers like Tami used and placed on a Crumb Cake cardstock.
This was an enjoyable challenge, especially reading a book that my husband suggested. This is not the kind of books I normally read, but it was good and held my interest. It gave us something to talk about. There is a another book that tells more of the story called The Rainbow Trail. I will probably read this sometime after I take a break and read other books.

I found the above photo by searching for Utah and Sage. It seems to be all about the book, movie, or another visual of the book.
You have created a beautiful scene and it was fun to read how it came together and the book that inspired it. Most of my reading is done on my tablet these days, but I think I may have Riders of the Purple Sage that was my dad’s in my long neglected library.
I read it on my Kindle. It is a nice book and it was the free copy from Amazon. Thanks!
Love your beautiful scene and stamped image. Your card shows that this was a great recommendation by your husband.
Thank you!
Your scene is amazing! My hubby has a lot of Zane Grey books from his childhood – I use them for display only as they are so old! Will see if I have this one! And read it! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Diana! Like I shared with Judy, this is on my Kindle and is free. It is in the public domain so if you wish to read on a tablet, I am sure you can get it.
This is an amazing card Lisa and it captures the book perfectly. You met the challenge and then some.
Thank you, Johanna. I do like the card.
AWESOME!!! card Lisa. You really aced the challenge.
Thanks Gerry! The conversation at lunch was what other kinds of cards to create based on books.
Lisa, the picture is very pretty. I’ve read several of Zane Grey’s books and have enjoyed many. So fun that your husband suggested it and you really liked it. You found a great way to share the book in your card. Those are great hills with the colors and I really like your front one covered in flowers. You have great creativity.
Thanks! The card idea came from Tami White and her video. I do like the flower paper.
WOW! You did an amazing job creating your scene. The patterned paper blends so seamlessly with your sponging. Great job!!
Thanks! It was fun to create while watching a video. I would never have thought to take a pattern and cut part and use it for something else.
