Blue Carnation

The Sisterhood of Crafters

Continuing with the “Blue” challenge theme for January, The Sisterhood of Crafters’ January Challenge is The Color Blue. Blue should be the obvious color on your card project. I decided to CASE a card that was posted on the SSS website when the Carnation Frame die was released. I purchased a Sudio71 watercolor kit that was on clearance at SimonSaysStamps some time ago. The kit includes paints, watercolors and watercolor pencils with a few brushes. I decided on three of the blues, a flat brush, some water and went to work on creating my striped background. Maybe I should have added some splatter to the background? What do you think?

I die cut the carnation frame twice and once in navy blue. The navy blue pieces were inset into my flower. Sentiment is from Gina K Designs Lacey Flowers.

This is the second card I made using the same concept but using a blue frame die cut.

I’me starting a collection of cards for troops and try to keep sentiments more general.

Waiting for the snow to begin or to fizzle today, watching the Eagles get clobbered by the Bucs and making some cards. Thanks for stopping in for a peek. Take care and be safe.

  1. Both so pretty! I like how you got two for one with the die cutting. The background is lovely the way it is, so I wouldn’t add the splatter.

  2. I love both of these but think the 2nd card is a bit more vibrant than the first. Like Lisa I think the background is perfect as is. Seems like blue is the colour every challenge is using this month.

    1. Thanks, Johanna, I used two different papers. One was text vellum and the other cardstock. I believe that may have contributed to the watercolor saturation.

  3. Now I am all in on splatter, especially if you have gold water color? Your first one stole my heart with the dark focal and boarder. Both will be greatly appreciated.

    1. I’ll have to remember the gold watercolor for splatter. I used the same colors with different papers…one in text vellum and the other in cardstock and it created a different saturation of colors.

  4. Gayle, these are gorgeous. I love your striped backgrounds and definitely think without the splatter is best, though I can imagine it would be pretty with, as well. The navy is perfect with your background, too.

  5. Both cards are beautiful and will be much appreciated. Your backgrounds are lovely. I’m not a huge fan of spatter, so I’d leave the as is.

  6. These both came out great! Love the soft water colored background (no splatters needed!), and the crisp look of the inlaid pieces on your carnation die cuts. So pretty!
